A. Dynamic behavior of thermo-mechanical continua. Design of Mechanical and biomedical systems. Analytical and experimental method has been developed for assessment of structural integrity. Method identifies crack propagation and change in porosity. Method applies in quality control and monitoring of dynamic behavior of structures made out of conventional materials, ceramics, composites, etc., (aircraft design, porous materials, bone quality, healing of fractures in bones, osteoporosis and metabolic diseases of bones).
The thermodynamic method has been used to characterize the damping caused from material porosity or cracks due to additional heating. Change in damping depends on porosity and crack depth. Increase of porosity leads to higher damping and change in damping increases with increase of crack depth.
Method has been successfully applied on bars, circular and rectangular plates, and structures of random geometry. The promising research findings suggest the following applications:
• Monitoring of structural integrity.
• Continuous quality control for production of ceramics, metals, glass, and other materials, sensitive to porosity and crack initiation.
• Design of materials with reduced noise, for which damping due to porosity plays a paramount role.
• Crack detection in mechanical structures or bones.
• Assessment of mandible quality for design of dental implants.
B. Besides, methodology has been developed for the assessment of mechanical properties of the prostate gland, in replacement of the subjective digital rectal examination performed by the urologist. Prototype device and appropriate genuine algorithm have been developed, with which geometric mapping and stiffness representation can be achieved, thus enabling to support the diagnosis for hyperplasia and prostate cancer, (Greek Patent).

Several devices for damping measurement have been designed and constructed. Each device is dedicated to the specific application (depending on size, geometry and type of items. Each device consits of exciting unit, response transducer (usually accelerometer), data aqcuisition system, appropriate software for calculation of damping.

Dedicated device has been designed and constructed for the assessment of the mechanical properties of the prostate gland (details in http://www.mech.upatras.gr/~panteliu)
