calcification and decalcification of tissues, biomaterials, stone formation, IOL opacification, calcium phosphate, oxalate
Biological mineralization
The formation of hard tissues (bone and teeth) and the calcification of cardiac aortas and valves is investigated in vitro. The formation of calcium phosphate (hydroxyapatite) from aqueous solutions at conditions of sustained solution supersaturation is studied in simulated biological fluids in order to study the mechanism of the formation of hydroxyapatite in vivo and the potential inhibiting role of various compounds and ions.
The formation of gallstones is also investigated in vitro through the study of crystallization of cholesterol and by comparison with surgically removed stones.
The mechanism of opacification of intraocular lenses due to the formation of insoluble calcium phosphate phases is investigated.
